	Plasma nitriding Method for the surface hardening of metals, in particular of steel.Herein, the substrate is connected with a cathodic potential and exposedto a nitrogen/hydrogen plasma at elevated temperatures. This leads firstto the removal of surface oxide, then nitrogen ions are incorporated inthe metal structure close to the surface, resulting in an increasedsurface hardness. Furthermore, sliding properties and corrosionresistance are improved in many cases. Beside steel, aluminium andtitanium can also be plasma nitrided.
